Donations of New Year food are welcome during the Chinese New Year

2025-02-04

The Food Commons@Shatin project funded by the Environment and Conservation Fund welcomes donations of Chinese New Year food from all walks of life. Today we were interviewed by RTHK Radio 31's "Hong Kong United". The show will be aired at 6:30 pm today.

During the interview, Mr. Leung Kam-tim, deputy convener of the Food Commons Foundation, shared that Chinese New Year foods are generally candies, biscuits, etc. that people give as gifts during the Chinese New Year. As long as the food is brand new and unopened and has not passed the best-before date, we welcome donations after the Chinese New Year. Since we are close to a public housing estate, the food will mainly be shared with grassroots residents and neighbors, especially the elderly living alone. These Chinese New Year foods are very popular, so when we receive them, we will ask them to come and pick them up, or we will deliver them to their homes.

In addition to Chinese New Year food, we regularly go to convenience stores to collect bread and cakes that are about to expire. We also go to the market in the evening to collect vegetables and share them with neighbors in need, avoiding food waste and helping people. In addition, we also accept large batches of food donations. In the past, we have received eggs, ice cream, cheese, etc. Due to the large quantity and the need for refrigeration of some of them, they are usually more sudden. After receiving the news, we will inform the neighbors and share them immediately after the arrival of the goods.

Neighbors who usually receive excess food sharing and help reduce food waste were interviewed. They all said that these food sharings are very important to them and have helped them a lot and reduced their living burden. Among them, Granny Kwok expressed her gratitude for this. "I'm glad to have the opportunity to share."
